what does your ideal day look like?

what does your ideal day look like?

Happiness in life doesn’t come from a weeklong trip to the beach or a Friday night at the club. Those events are fun of course, but they don’t lead to the kind of overwhelming and sustainable bliss we’re all searching for in the normal course of our day-to-day lives.

That’s why, if we’re truly to find lasting happiness in this world, we must do our best to make the average Tuesday just as special as the average Saturday.

It’s boring, but it’s the truth.

So if you’re not there yet, then you need to ask yourself this question:

What does my ideal day look like?

In other words, if you could structure your average day any way you wanted -- while still meeting all of the requirements of life as an adult -- how would you do it?

To do this exercise, just grab a piece of paper or open the Notes app in your phone. Write down the activities in a day you’d like to accomplish during and outside of your workday. Then, block out a specific set of time for each activity, choosing wisely the number of hours you’re spending on certain things.

Maybe you want to exercise more. Or perhaps you want to practice your sewing skills, join a club, spend more time with friends, attend more happy hours or build a side business, but you’ve just never “had the time.”

Well, now is your chance to make the time.

And remember, this is your average day. No dreamy vacation scenarios are allowed.

To get you started, here’s my ideal day:

  • 5:00am: Wake up
  • 5:00-5:15: Journal, drink coffee, eat oatmeal, think in silence
  • 5:15-6:15: Write (coffee by my side, cell phone nowhere in sight)
  • 6:15-6:30: Research/learn about the podcast business, NFTs, news or anything else that I’m interested in
  • 6:30-7:30: Work
  • 7:30-8:30 Exercise
  • 8:30-9:00 Stretch, shower, eat, get dressed, brush teeth
  • 9:00-12:00pm Work
  • 12:00pm-12:30 Snack, walking break
  • 12:30-4:30 Work
  • 4:30-5:30 Dinner, listen to a podcast, wash dishes
  • 5:30-6:15 Post-dinner walk
  • 6:15-6:45 Read
  • 6:45-8:45 Work
  • 8:45-9:15 Social media, TV, fun time on the computer, etc.
  • 9:15-9:45 Night journaling, prepare coffee for morning, brush teeth, go to sleep

This is my ideal day, and it’s what I strive for every day.

Does it always go according to script? Of course not. I spend too much time on my phone. An unexpected phone call or meeting throws me off schedule. A work task takes way longer than I hoped.

But it’s what I’m working toward.

On this day, I’ve allotted time for exercise, healthy eating, reading, learning, solo contemplation and sunlight -- all of which I consider to be extremely valuable when it comes to building a healthy and happy life. Throw in the occasional phone call with a friend while on my post-dinner walk and the day gets that much better.

And guess what?

I’m able to fit all of this in while still working for 10+ hours a day.

We like to say that we “don’t have time” for this or that, but the truth is, yes we do. As I made this schedule, I realized just how much time we have and honestly, I was embarrassed that my average day doesn’t resemble this more often.

Like you, I spend too much time scrolling and consuming. The more I can limit that, the easier it will be for me to live up to the standard of my ideal day.

But enough about me, what’s your ideal day look like?
